The Swazi folk painter Lucas Mlambo (1959- ) whose work, View of Sidwashini, is held in the Standard Bank Collection, is never at a loss for subject matter. He delights in telling the simple stories of how people live and what they do in town and country.
He does so in bright flat colour, in incorrect perspective and with awkwardly drawn figures in paintings like Washing Day – Manzini and Nhlangano Town, Mshengu Street, but it’s this untrained and unrestrained way of seeing that makes these paintings so thoroughly charming. Read more »
A retrospective exhibition of Ephraim Ngatane’s work, will run at the Standard Bank Gallery from 9 February to 13 March 2010.
Ngatane made a marked impression on the art of the 1950s and 1960s, creating artworks that captured the essence of township living and that conveyed emotion and depth. Although many artists of that time used the township as their subject matter, what set Ngatane apart was his approach, which included a wide spectrum of colour and geometric shapes.
A hardcover book on Ngatane, entitled “A Setting Apart”, edited by Rory Bester, will be launched at the opening. Read more »
Nicholas Hlobo, winner of this year’s Standard Bank Young Artist Award, has worked hard to get to where he is today. He is extremely ambitious and equally determined to be remembered as one of South Africa’s great artists who has preserved and celebrated the South African culture.

Visit the Standard Bank Gallery to view the Standard Bank Young Artists: 25 exhibition, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for the visual arts.
Just recently displayed at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the exhibition opened on 6 August and runs until 19 September.
